The Craft of Church Planting: Exploring the Lost Wisdom of Apprenticeship (SCM Press)
“Drawing on insights from the training practices of the English medieval craft guilds, a global survey of 500 church planters, interviews with artists and church planting trainers and the author's 30 years of ministry experience, this book offers a distinctive and imaginative perspective on the methods used to train future practitioners in the art of church planting.”
Available in print and eBook from late June 2022.

Christian Selvaratnam is the founder and Dean of the Centre for Church Planting and the Church Planting Track at St Hild College. Prior to this, he worked for fifteen years at Alpha UK in various roles, including National Director, and concurrently for fourteen years as the Ordained Leader of G2, an Anglican church plant in York.
As an undergraduate at Warwick University, he studied Mathematics and Theoretical Computation. Following this, he had a number of jobs including working as a Church of England verger, as the manager of a printing business and as a pastor and church planter with Newfrontiers. Later, he trained for ministry in the Church of England at Cranmer Hall and was ordained in the first cohort of Ordained Pioneer Ministers in 2008.
Over the last twenty-five years, Christian has personally planted two churches and sent out and supported a number of others. More widely, he is involved in training leaders and advising on church planting, innovation, mission and vocations, particularly in the North of England.
He is an Associate of the Gregory Centre for Church Multiplication, an Associate Missioner for Fresh Expressions UK, an Archbishops’ Evangelist in the College of Evangelists, a member of the National Anglican Community of Pioneers, a board member of Exponential Europe, a member of the General Synod of the Church of England and co-founder of the Asbury Theological Seminary Doctor of Ministry in Church Planting (UK & Europe) Cohort 2021.
In 2020, Christian completed his doctoral studies at Asbury Theological Seminary. His thesis explored how the historic practices of English medieval craft guilds might inform apprenticeship methods of training for the next generation of church planters. This research will be published with SCM Press in 2022.
Christian is married to Amanda, they live in York and have three grown-up children. He is a St John Ambulance Volunteer Covid Vaccinator, cooks a mean lamb biryani and owns a caravan.
