Develop as a Practitioner-Theologian in Church Planting

Explore mission, leadership and church planting through the lenses of evangelical, sacramental and Pentecostal traditions, under the guidance of leading practitioners and thinkers. Through this programme, you will be equipped as a leader skilled in shaping mission and church planting nationally and across networks. Learning from within a British and European context, and as part of a diverse cohort, you will engage in advanced theological study and field research, designed to cultivate your growth as a practical theologian, writer and expert practitioner.

This cohort will tackle topics including:

  • the theology and practice of church planting from evangelical, sacramental/liturgical and Pentecostal perspectives;

  • approaches to mission and evangelism through the church;

  • leadership dynamics in mission and church planting;

  • study of the lives of key historic leaders and of significant periods in this field; and

  • the principals of church growth, church multiplication and the dynamics of church planting movements.

As you complete your degree, you will:

  • have developed advanced skills for theological study and empirical research;

  • engaged in structured and self-directed academic study and writing;

  • cultivated new relationships with peers for ministry connections;

  • expanded your understanding of ministry methods and perspectives; and

  • increased your potential for greater local and national ministry.

Lead professors and tutors

Revd Dr Christian Selvaratnam is an Anglican priest and Dean of Church Planting at St Hild College in the North of England and one of the Ambassadors of the Archbishops’ College of Evangelists in the Church of England. Before this, he was the National Director of Alpha UK, a church planter and a free-church minister.

Maria Boschker is the COO of Exponential Europe where she plays a key role in shaping strategy and vision and developing relationships with churches across Europe. She is experienced in church planting and church consultancy; her previous background is in neuroscientific research.

Revd Alex Harris is a Regional Minister focussed on pioneering and church planting in the Baptist Union of Great Britain. He is Director of Baptist Church Planting at St Hild Centre for Church Planting, where he oversees national planting initiatives including ‘Everyone Everywhere’, and he co-leads the Firestarter network of growing churches.

Rt Revd Dr Ric Thorpe is the Bishop of Islington and Director of the Gregory Centre for Church Multiplication. He serves the Church of England nationally, supporting bishops, dioceses, church planters and pioneers to develop church planting strategies and to plant new worshipping communities to reach new people in new places in new ways.

Teaching and partners

The teaching for this cohort will be delivered in England with elements in-person and online. The core courses will be delivered by seminary faculty; the seminar courses will draw on leading theologians and practitioners from diverse traditions. This cohort is delivered in association with St Hild College, Exponential Europe and the Gregory Centre for Church Multiplication.
